Why Are We Focusing on Biodegradable PCL?

Daicel is a globally recognized manufacturer of caprolactone oligomers. Aside from our current product portfolio, we are also broadening our capabilities and efforts to enter the biodegradable polymer market through the development of high molecular weight polycaprolactone. PCL is a thermoplastic polymer that can be used in adhesives, packaging, and films, as well as in other polymer blends as an additive/modifier. It is produced from the ring-opening polymerization of the ε-Caprolactone monomer. 


This polymer can be used to impart the following properties compared to standard thermoplastics:  

Excellent flexibility and mechanical properties (great processability) 

Great low temperature property retention and thermal stability

Outstanding compatibility with other polymers 

Good adhesion to a wide variety of substrates 

Able to biodegrade in the environment (Bio-assimilable)

Low Tm and excellent shape retention when cooled

Opportunities For This Product

Like other thermoplastic polyesters, PCL is biodegradable. As the world focuses on providing products through sustainable technologies that have a reduced impact on the environment, utilizing biodegradable polymers can make your product more appealing to the customer and beneficial altogether.

Compared to other polyesters, PCL is made by ε-caprolactone monomer. Its unique structure imparts different physical and chemical properties than other polyesters like PLA/PHA/PGA. PCL is commonly blended or compounded with these polyesters to improve their mechanical properties, compatibility, and hydrolytic stability. In addition, PCL has a low melting point and can be used in applications where thermoforming at lower temperatures is required. Furthermore, PCL typically begins to degrade around 230℃. Given that the melting point of PCL is around 60℃, the processability of PCL is superior to PLA.
